History and Importance of Hydroponic Gardening

As we have entered into the tech era, a number of technological advancements can be seen in our daily life. These advancements are not only related to science or medical fields but can also be viewed in other areas as well, such as sports, traveling, gardening and much more. If we just talk about gardening, then with the growing demand of food and natural plants, gardening has been improved in numerous ways. One doesn’t have to wait to enjoy the goodness of a natural item that is grown in a particular season. Humans of the present century have invented alternative ways to grow such seeds i.e. hydroponic gardening.

Hydroponic Gardening System

Literally, hydroponic gardening is the more enhanced version of greenhouse planting. This system utilizes water to grow plants instead of soil. According to many researchers, the deep roots of hydroponics can be seen in the history but it is more refined and practiced today. The art of hydroponic gardening can be witnessed in hanging plants of Babylon which is a proof that this technology is not new but has been adopted with many improvements in the practices and procedures. Clean water containing an abundance of oxygen and nutrients were used to keep plants breathing without having any soil contact their root structures. Other likely applications of hydroponics in the early centuries have also been witnessed within the Aztec culture.

Hydroponic Greenhouse Gardening Is A Great Option For Growing Vegetables

By Percy Troughton

Why Hydroponic Greenhouse Gardening is Good for the Environment
Most tried and true organic gardeners have long looked upon hydroponic greenhouse gardening with disdain. This kind of gardening has long been considered by the purists to be a form of chemical agriculture. The thought of feeding tender young vegetable shoots a steady diet of chemicals was not what organic farmers had in mind. They were trying to get away from this type of farming practices, until a man named Steve Fox from Albuquerque, New Mexico came onto the hydroponic greenhouse gardening scene.

Hydroponic Book

Environmental Hydroponic Greenhouse Gardening

This type of gardening is a viable alternative to the destruction of once fertile soils using chemicals. The proposal is that hydroponic greenhouse gardening will produce greater yields and would free up the land once used for commercial farming into soil that could be refreshed and renewed for actual organic farming.

No longer would the chemicals that Big Food implements for the growing process poison the soil, it could all be contained by hydroponic greenhouse gardening. In a greenhouse atmosphere, chemicals considered dangerous would be used within a controlled environment. Gravel is used as the stabilizing material for the roots and stems of plants, so the only thing the chemicals would be spoiling is that same gravel.

You may be saying to yourself, “Now wait just a minute, I don’t want my family or myself to eat vegetables that have been grown in a chemical solution.” When you grow vegetables using hydroponic greenhouse gardening practices, the vegetables are not taking in any harmful chemicals, they are taking in a specialized chemical solution that is made to nourish them.

The Natural Alternative

Hydroponic greenhouse gardening is a way to feed the plant and not the soil. Conventional gardening methods also use chemical fertilizer to feed the plants, but it is not to theirs and the soil’s advantage, and that is why this method is beginning to fail. Soil can easily be depleted of its valuable nutrients when farming and growing practices fail to take into account the future of the land they are using.

Most big food growers incorporate methods that produce high yields of produce without thought to future generations. When growers use the hydroponic greenhouse gardening method, you can give the soil a chance to regenerate and replenish the minerals and nutrients it needs to be rich and fertile.

Before thinking of hydroponic greenhouse gardening in a negative light, find out the facts before you make any final decisions. You may find that the positive aspects of hydroponic greenhouse gardening far outweigh the negative. Do your research and find out more about how hydroponic greenhouse gardening can produce vegetables that are fresh, tasty, nutritious and good for the environment too.

Gardening Without Getting Dirty

Gardening Without Getting Dirty Welcome to Hydroponic Gardening
By Benjamin Brookes

To many people the idea of growing plants is a crazy concept. Hydroponic gardening has been around for thousands of years and many small farms have begun to embrace this method of gardening. In its simplest form, hydroponic gardening can be envisioned as a plant stuck through the top of a glass canning jar with its roots covered with fertilized water. Despite how simple a hydroponic garden setup can be, there are many ways in which you can accomplish the same task, it all depends on the size of your hydroponic setup.

Dirty garden
Photo: plu.edu

Here are some example methods of a hydroponic setup:

1) Static - In a static hydroponic setup the plants are grown in a container of nutrient solution this setup is most common in homes were the plants can be grown in glass jars with just enough of the root outside of the solution so it can get oxygen.

2) In its simplest form, there is a tray above a reservoir of nutrient solution. The tray is either filled with growing medium (clay granules being the most common) and planted directly, or pots of medium stand in the tray. At regular intervals, a simple timer causes a pump to fill the upper tray with nutrient solution, after which the solution drains back down into the reservoir. This keeps the medium regularly flushed with nutrients and air.

3) In continuous flow solution culture the nutrient solution constantly flows past the roots. It is much harder to automate than the static solution culture because sampling and adjustments to degree and nutrient concentrations can be made in a large storage tank that serves potentially thousands of plants.

In traditional gardening, the soil works as a storage reservoir for all the fertilization needed by the plants. The soil holds in the nutrients, releasing them to the roots as needed while in hydroponic gardening the hairs of the plant's roots can sip at the nutrient rich water at any time they need something to eat.

Healthier, Larger Fruit Produced In Hydroponic Gardens

When plants are growing in soil, the roots typically grow larger than on plants in hydroponic gardening. This allows the part of the plant above the soil, or in this case, out of the water, to grow larger and the fruit it bears to grow bigger. Most plants grown through hydroponic gardening are larger, bear more fruit and have a better taste and texture than the same plants grown with tradition gardening methods.

Here are some examples of the mediums that are used in a hydroponic garden:

1)Expanded Clay - Also known as 'Hydroton' or 'leca' (light expanded clay aggregate), trademarked names, these small, round baked spheres of clay are inert and are suitable for hydroponic systems in which all nutrients are carefully controlled in water solution. The clay pellet is also inert, pH neutral and do not contain any nutrient value.

2) Rockwool - Is probably the most widely used medium in hydroponics. Made from basalt rock it is heat-treated at high temperatures then spun back together like candy floss. It comes in lots of different forms including cubes, blocks, slabs and granulated or flock.

3) Coir - Coco peat, also known as coir or coco, is the leftover material after the fibres have been removed from the outermost shell (bolster) of the coconut. It took 10 centuries to make this waste a viable plant substrate. The first description of the coco process dates from the 11th century and was recorded by Arabian traders. In 1290, Marco Polo described the process of extracting fibres from coconuts. For centuries, this process remained unchanged. Coco peat was a waste product from factories that used coco fibre as a raw material for making sailing ropes, chair seats and mattress fillings.

With static immersion, the roots are below the water level on a constant basis, with the water changed about once a week to maintain fertility in the hydroponic gardening. With continuous flow, the water is constantly changed in the growing tank, with fresh nutrients continually available to plant roots and with ebb and flow, fresh water is supplied to the growing tank where it slowly drips away into a reservoir from which it is recycled back to the growing tank.

The Use Of Indoor Gardening Sets To Get Started

By AnnMarier M

Gardening has been a passion with mankind for many reasons such as, growing vegetables and herbs for a healthy life, growing flowers and plants for a better environment and also engaging in a relaxing and rewarding practice that everyone will benefit in the end, you, your family and the world. Indoor gardening is a great concept because it brings a little peace of heaven in your house even in the cold months of winter when you cannot enjoy outdoor gardening anymore. Here is how you can get started and have a garden in matter of minutes with al inclusive indoor gardening sets.

The Different Types Of Indoor Gardening Sets
Indoor gardening sets are made for beginners and professionals and they usually contain of everything you will require to get started right away without the plants, herbs or flowers, which you will require to pick according to your own desire. There are a few types of indoor gardening sets and they are: organic, hydroponics, aeroponics and typical indoor gardening sets. Deciding on which type of indoor gardening sets should be easy if you consider what are you going to grow in your garden and how large you want it to be; organic indoor gardening sets are usually the most popular because it provides chemical free products and still provides you with the pleasure of gardening. Hydroponics and aeroponics indoor gardening sets are fully automated and will grow great quality plants, veggies or herbs but will require a bigger investment.
To shop for indoor gardening sets try local home improvement and gardening stores where professionals will be able to guide you to the type you require and get you started in the minimum amount of time.

Maintaining An Indoor Garden
People enjoy indoor gardens for many reasons but end up killing them because they treat it as outdoors gardens and that is a big mistake. Indoor gardens require humidity to live especially in winter when we have the heat turned up and the air in the house gets dry in the process; a humidifier will do the trick but remember to also keep an eye open not to create mold in your

house in the process.
Watering an indoor garden must be done moderately and only as per the requirements of the plants not forgetting however that their space is limited and drainage is not as good as outdoors soil; many people over water their plants causing them to die, try and feel the soil first by touching it before you water your indoor garden.

The Benefits of Gardening the Hydroponic Way

Gardening has been considered to be one of the most therapeutic rewards for North Americans. Gardening stimulates all of the senses, giving great satisfaction and pleasure. Hydroponics is the growing of plants without the use of soil. A variety of hydroponic gardening techniques exist and just about any plant can be grown with hydroponics. Hydroponic gardening is considered to be quite easy and many teachers use this method of gardening with their students when working on science projects.

There are a variety of benefits associated with hydroponic gardening. When plants are grown using hydroponics, the roots do not need to search for required nutrients. The nutrient solution is provided directly to them, which results in plant growth, which is more abundant. Incorporating hydroponics into an outdoor garden can help add interest and intrigue. The natural conditions available outdoors in the summer make it a perfect time to experiment with the various types of hydroponic cultivation. Annual flowers, fruit, herbs, and vegetables do exceptionally well with hydroponics.

With hydroponics, important growing factors such as light, temperature, and humidity can be controlled. Since there is no soil, there is less maintenance involved with hydroponics. There is no need for weeding and the worry of pests or soil borne diseases is drastically reduced. Hydroponics is always a soil less culture, but not all soil less cultures are considered to be hydroponics. Many of these cultures do not use the nutrient solutions, which are required for hydroponics. There are two main types of hydroponics, which are solution culture and medium culture. Solution culture uses a nutrient solution but does not use a solid growing medium for the roots. The medium culture has a solid growing medium for the roots such as gravel, sand or a perlite culture. Hydroponic plants are grown in a number of ways, each supplying nutrient solution to the plants one way or another.

Hydroponics can be used to grow plants anywhere, even in your own backyard. Using hydroponics can grow anything from garden crops to flowers. Hydroponic gardening is considered to be a clean and highly effective method for growing plants. There is less mess and less maintenance. Hydroponic gardening helps to eliminate the need for weeding and helps to cut down on diseases and pests. This form of gardening is also easily adapted to indoor environments, which means it can be used throughout the year to grow a gardener’s favorite plants. The greatest advantage to hydroponics is the overall outcome of the plants, which will be of better quality and are much healthier. Gardeners can give nature a helping hand while enjoying the therapeutic benefits of their garden. Gardeners will be able to watch the spectacular improvements that growing hydroponically can bring to their garden.

Hydroponics has always been an ecologically sound gardening choice. It uses much less water than conventional gardening and does not erode the soil or add toxins to the environment. Soluble nutrient formulas are re-circulated and used by the plants’ roots, which helps eliminate environmental waste. Plants tend to be healthier in a hydroponic system than those grown in soil, which makes them more pest resistant. Biological control agents are used as preventative measures. Harmful herbicides are simply not required because there are no weeds in a hydroponic garden. As many gardeners today are choosing to grow organically, organic crop cultivation in hydroponics has become very popular. Organic gardening is the cultivation of plants without the use of synthetic chemicals or pesticides. Gardeners are willing to invest in the extras required by organic gardening because it ensures that no harmful pesticides or fungicides will be used. There are many organic nutrients and additives designed specifically for use in hydroponic gardens. To find out more about hydroponics see:

Weather and Soil Conditions

Indoor Gardening Supplies Overcome Weather and Soil Conditions
By Susan Slobac

Indoor gardening supplies make it possible to garden no matter the weather or soil in your locale!

Hydroponics Guide
Photo: organicgardening365.com

Whether you garden indoors professionally or as a fun hobby, indoor gardening supplies such as grow light kits with the appropriate digital ballast and LED grow lights can be used with soil based or soil-less indoor gardening systems. Gardening without using soil is a practice known as hydroponics. Because typically no soil is involved, this style of indoor gardening with a controlled growing environment can be practiced virtually anywhere--in a high-rise apartment, in the cold North where temperatures dip well below freezing, in the desert with its accompanying sweltering heat, and it even has been tested by astronauts in outer space.

There are some basic indoor gardening supplies common to every style of indoor gardening, including hydroponic systems, that you might wish to pursue. All plants need light in order to survive, so you will want to provide your indoor plants with appropriate grow lights.

What indoor gardening supplies do I need to get started?
One major component of any hydroponics gardening system is the lighting you will use. The appropriate lighting depends on several factors, including the types of plants you are growing indoors and in which stage of their life cycle the plants are.

Young seedlings require light that falls within the blue color spectrum in order to grow and reach maturity. Mature plants, such as flowers or fruiting plants like tomatoes or strawberries, need a light spectrum in the red to orange range in order to get the plants to set fruit or flower. You can find grow lights that offer specific light spectrums, so that you can provide your plants with exactly the correct light that they need to respond in the way you want.

Grow lamps are also used in conjunction with a suitable digital ballast. The ballast is the device that controls the amount of electrical current flowing to the light bulb in order to get it to not only spark, but once lit, to keep a steady light emerging from the bulb. Each ballast is specifically designed to work with its own specialized grow lamp, so it is important to know whether your grow lamp is an LED (light-emitting diode),or is one of the HID (high-intensity discharge) lamps, which can include mercury vapor, low-pressure sodium, zenon short-arc, metal halide and high-pressure sodium.

There are a wide variety of indoor gardening supplies suitable for any type of indoor gardening you practice, whether a traditional greenhouse, hydroponics, or others.

Master gardener Susan Slobac shares her experience with indoor gardening and hydroponics. Get the details on how a few basic indoor gardening supplies can overcome the poor weather or soil conditions of any area.

Is Hydroponics Right For You?

If you haven’t heard of hydroponic gardening let’s start from the top! The word comes from two Greek words meaning water and labor. Hydroponics is a soil-less way of gardening that’s been around for thousands of years. Scientists in Western countries began researching this method during the mid-century, around 1950. However many Eastern countries like China have been aware of soilless gardening for much longer. While it sounds futuristic to garden without soil this method has been around since 7th Century BC! How amazing is that?

Hydroponics Plant

Recent studies have shown that the yields from hydroponic gardening are incredible. Plants grown using this method don’t take up nearly as much space as other plants, they’re of incredibly high quality, and growing them doesn’t require the use of as many resources. The fact that it doesn’t take up a lot of space and that major retailers like Amazon are selling hydroponic systems makes this method of gardening ideal for urban dwellers. Growing indoors has never been more possible!

Want a Garden, But Don't have Enough Dirt Or Space? Hydroponics Gardening Is The Answer!

Hydroponics gardening is the perfect solution for anybody who wants a garden, but does not have enough space or dirt. Hydroponics gardening is, simply put, a method of growing plants using a nutrient solution instead of dirt. With hydroponics gardening, you are able to grow beautiful flowers and delicious vegetables virtually anywhere you want.

In addition, hydroponics gardening requires much less maintenance than a normal garden would. In fact, you will usually spend less than five minutes a day maintaining your hydroponics garden. Every few weeks the nutrient solution will have to be replaced, but that too will only take a few minutes. While some heavy fruiting vegetables like tomatoes and peppers may not be able to thrive in the nutrient solution, almost all other types of flowers and vegetables will just fine in a hydroponics garden.

Tips for the person new to Hydroponics Gardening.
While hydroponics gardening might seem difficult to a person doing it for the first time, you will be able to quickly get the hang of it. Just like you need gardening supplies for a regular garden, you will need hydroponics gardening supplies for hydroponics gardening.

The most common method of hydroponics gardening is the passive system. In the passive system, plants will sit directly in the nutrient solution. Because the solution might cause the plants to rot if not oxygenated, all passive systems come with an aquarium air bubbler, which will oxygenate the nutrient solution. If you find the hydroponics gardening method that is right for you, you will soon be enjoying all the gardening hydroponics vegetables, flowers and fruit that you could possible want.

Hydroponics as a Hobby

By Susan Slobac

If you love gardening, it can really be a drag when winter approaches and puts a chilly end to your outdoor activities. But you don't have to stop gardening if you would like to try hydroponics gardening. You need no soil for this type of gardening, but instead you grow your plants in mineral nutrient solutions. It is pretty easy to grow vegetables, fruits and flowers indoors even in the depth of a bitter winter when you choose hydroponics gardening as a hobby.

Hydroponics Guide

You might find it easiest to start in with this style of gardening by purchasing what you need in kits. All plants require adequate light in order for them to thrive and grow well, so grow lights are an important part of your hydroponics system. Grow light kits are available, including all the parts you will need, including the grow lights, digital ballast, and reflectors. Many gardening enthusiasts like to use LED grow lights, because they are small but don't overheat. They also produce a tremendous amount of light efficiently in the light color spectrums you will need in order for your plants to flourish.

There are several different ways to go about hydroponics gardening. Static solution culture is one method used. The plants are grown in solution in some kind of container to hold the liquid, such as a jar, plastic tank, tub or bucket. You can cut a hole in the lid of the container to hold the plant out of the liquid, but allow the roots into the solution so they can take up the nutrients they need. Roots also need oxygen, which is why many gardeners use some type of aquarium aerator to get adequate oxygen to the plant roots. As solution is depleted by the plant roots, the gardener replenishes the supply on a regular basis.

Some methods of hydroponics require the use of a growing medium. This soilless product can be gravel, perlite, vermiculite, rockwool, or clay granules. Passive subirrigation allows plants to sit in the growing medium, which brings the nutrients and water to the roots from the bottom of the growing medium. Because the growing medium is coarse, oxygen also has easy access to the roots as well. The container that holds the plants can sit in nutrient solution or on top of a mat that is saturated with the solution. This easy method is fairly low maintenance, because you only need to occasionally refill the nutrient and wash out the system to get rid of salt buildup, which can kill plants.

There are many advantages to hydroponics, including no weeding. Diseases that lurk in the soil are not an issue in this soilless gardening form. This also means that you will not need to use a lot of pesticide to control diseases. Less water is used for hydroponic gardening than for crops grown in soil outdoors. So try a new winter hobby: hydroponics gardening.

Susan Slobac works at a Hydroponics supply store and is knowledgeable about hydroponics systems. She enjoys assisting people who want to get started with hydroponics gardening. From choosing the right grow light kit to deciding which hydroponics system is best for you, Susan has advice you can use.

Gardening for no Garden

Hydroponics Gardening Works Even When You Have No Garden!
By Tony Buel

Hydroponics gardening is a great solution for anybody who wants a garden, but doesn't have enough space or dirt. Hydroponics gardening is favored among people without the luxury of enough space for a real garden. And in countries that have been struggling with food production, they have turned to hydroponics in order to meet demand.

Hydroponic Supply

Why choose hydroponics over the conventional gardening methods using soil and composts etc? Many advantages are to be gained over conventional (soil based) seed germination by using hydroponics. For instance, hydroponics gardening requires much less maintenance than a normal garden would. Weeds are rarely an issue. The climate is controlled by you so you can cater the environment to the vegetable or plant you are working with for optimal growth. While hydroponics gardening might seem difficult to a person doing it for the first time, you will be able to quickly get the hang of it.

An adequate water supply is not normally a problem when using a hydroponics system, since the basis of hydroponics is the supply of water containing nutrients in solution. And once you have your hydroponics garden set up properly, you only need to spend five minutes a day maintaining the system.

With hydroponics gardening, the plants are grown in a solution of nutrients which have been dissolved in water instead of soil. During the 1930s, scientists experimenting with the growing of plants without soil discovered that the soil was needed only as an anchor for the plant's root system. Thus, this new nutrient transport system was implemented.

It is vitally important that the pH of the nutrient used in the hydroponic system matches the plant's own internal pH as closely as possible. This will ensure that proper chemical exchange takes place. The temperature is maintained with the use of modern grow lights. Your plants will not be stressed through changes in conditions of light, temperature or water as is the case with plants grown by the conventional gardening methods.

Some experts say that the techniques learned so far in the field of hydroponics should be implemented on all soil gardens as well as in hydroponics systems.

There are many different plant nutrients on the hydroponics market today, so getting the information you need for your own hydroponics is relatively easy to come by. There are many resources and guides available and getting started with your very own hydroponics gardening system has never been easier.

Essential Gardening Tool

With all the tools we have available today, the most important and significant gardening tool of all is actually our own body. We must be sure to take care of our bodies while gardening, as well as remember to position our bodies properly, in order to prevent ourselves from enduring aches and pains afterwards.

Hydroponics Guide

By taking the time to learn how to properly position the body, one can continue to enjoy the hobby of gardening without having any pain take them away from it.

How to Properly Position Body

There are many areas of the body which we must remember to focus on in order to minimize muscle fatigue and soreness. The back is one of the most important, and there are several key pointers in order to position the back properly.

First, make sure to bend at the knees and hips when lifting and holding objects. Be sure to use an erect body posture when working at ground level, in order to avoid kinking the back muscles, and if you are someone who happens to already have existing back problems, be sure to take advice such as this even more seriously, in order to avoid further problems.

Considering that our body is the most essential gardening tool, out of all the available limbs on our body, the hands are the most important gardening tool of all. Positioning the hands properly during gardening consists of making sure to work with the wrists and hands in a neutral position especially if working against resistance.

Also remember to spread the tasks you have in regards to gardening throughout different days, in consideration of the fact that completing tasks repetitively will cause soreness and muscle aches, so completing the tasks throughout several days rather than pushing them all into one.

In regards to what gardening tool is best for use, there are several pointers which must be taken into consideration. For instance, shorter tool handles provide greater leverage control, while longer tool handles provide greater power and are better for such things that will require your full body motion.

This also applies in consideration to an individual's height; obviously the taller you are, the taller gardening tool you will need, and the shorter you are, the shorter gardening tool you will need. By carefully evaluating the proper length you will need - in order to avoid excessive leaning - you can save your body from soreness and possible injury.

Process of Hydroponic Gardening

Hydroponics Kits Simplify the Process of Hydroponic Gardening
By Susan Slobac

There are many advantages to hydroponics, the popular soilless gardening system. It is a way to practice indoor gardening when gardening outdoors is not an options, such as in remote locales like Antarctica, outer space, or even in an apartment building high above your city. Because hydroponics uses no soil, plants are not bothered by diseases that incubate in the soil, and neither are they crowded out by weeds.

Hydroponics Guide
Photo: hobbyhydro.com

Because the environment is strictly controlled in order to produce the best results with the plants being grown, hydroponics gardening usually uses less water, energy and fewer pesticides while requiring less space than conventional outdoor gardening. Hydroponic kits take all the guesswork out of growing indoors, because all of the major components are included.
What are some of the different hydroponic kits available?

1. Deep water culture kits
One method of hydroponics is deep water culture. The crown of the plant is suspended over the nutrient solution by a net. The net is placed in a hole in the center of a plastic lid, which fits on top of a plastic bucket. The roots remain in the solution to soak up nutrients, which is the plant's food. In order for plants to thrive with this gardening method, the solution must be aerated in some manner, because the movement of the liquid helps to bring the nutrient to the plant roots, allowing them to feed and oxygenates the liquid as well.

You can have one bucket or several buckets linked together in deep water culture gardening. When several buckets are used, the water is typically recirculated through all of them using spray nozzles, which helps to aerate the liquid.

2. Aeroponic gardening kits
Aeroponics is a subset of hydroponics where plants' roots, rather than being suspended in the liquid nutrient, are instead suspended in air. The roots are regularly misted with nutrient, as an alternative to floating in solution typically found in hydroponics systems. Plants grow very quickly using this type of growing system.

3. Ebb and Flow kits
This method of hydroponics was inspired by large farms that use irrigation as a means for watering outdoor crops. With ebb and flow kits, there is a pan of nutrient solution and above this pan is a tray that holds plants that are planted into some type of growing medium, such as rockwool or coir. A pump is called into play to fill the tray holding the plants with nutrient solution, and after it fills the solution drains back down into the pan. Because of the movement of the solution into and out of the tray, ebb and flow provides its own means of aeration of the plant nutrients.

Susan Slobac shares her experience with indoor gardening and hydroponics. As a certified master gardener, Susan has a vast amount of experience using a variety of the most popular hydroponic kits.

How Do Hydroponic Gardening Systems Work?

The idea of hydroponic gardening (gardening without soil), has been around since the time of King Solomon. There are a few advantages with hydroponic gardening over traditional gardening -for example the rate of growth of a hydroponic plant can be up to 50% faster than a soil plant grown under the same conditions.
And the yield of the plant is also greater!

Hydroponics Guide

The reason for this is that the plants get their nutrition fed directly into their roots from nutrient rich water. Since this water is so high in nutrient content, the plant does not need large roots to search for nutrition. And since the plant expends less energy in growing roots it has more energy available to be productive above the rootline! Hydroponically grown vegetables are healthy, vigorous, and consistently reliable. This form of gardening is clean and extremely easy, and it requires very little effort.

Hydroponic gardening is also beneficial to the environment. For example hydroponic gardening uses considerably less water than soil gardening because of the constant reuse of the nutrient solutions. And also, fewer pesticides are necessary in hydroponic crops -they are not as necessary. And topsoil erosion is not even an issue since hydroponic gardening systems use no topsoil.

How exactly does a hydroponically grown plant get its nutrition -nutrition it normally gets from the soil? Well, these nutrients come in liquid or powdered mixes and can be purchased at a hydroponic supply store. And like soil, hydroponic systems can be fertilized with organic or chemical nutrients. But you should know that an organic hydroponic system can be considerably more work to maintain since the organic compounds have a tendency clump.

Hydroponic systems are normally categorized as passive or active. An active hydroponic system moves the nutrient solution with a pump. A passive hydroponic system relies on the capillary action of the growing medium or a wick.

In a passive system the nutrient rich solution is absorbed by the medium or the wick and passed along to the plant's roots. But a downside with this method is that they are usually too wet and do not supply enough oxygen to the root system for the best growth rates.

Hydroponic systems are also characterized as recovery or non-recovery. In recovery systems, the nutrient solution is re-circulated for reuse. In a non-recovery system however, the nutrient solution is not recovered.

You may be unsure of whether to buy or build a hydroponic system. If you have an 'engineering mind' and want to build one, consider buying one first just to get familiar with the inner workings. Buy a system which does not cost a lot of money. It will give you a better understanding of how hydroponics works and the hands-on experience can be worth the cost of the system as you will be able to reuse the parts when you decide to build one.

Hydroponics gardening is a popular and growing hobby and many are finding this to be fun, exciting, and easy to get started.

Gardening Tool

With all the tools we have available today, the most important and significant gardening tool of all is actually our own body. We must be sure to take care of our bodies while gardening, as well as remember to position our bodies properly, in order to prevent ourselves from enduring aches and pains afterwards.

Major Categories of Hydroponics Gardening

By Allan Wilson

This is an attempt to explain basic types or categories of Hydroponics Gardening. Hydroponics is a method where gardiners grow plants without soil. It doesn’t mean that it does not need soil. Different mediums are used instead of more soil to grow plants. The nutrients are mixed with water and provide all requirements to the plants.

There are some strong points of the Hydroponics Gardening that give you confidence and wonderful results. Plants grow faster with healthy life. This system needs less labor, time, and investment and gives more benefits. This is a more simpler, easier and cleaner method of gardening or farming. It keeps consistency in results. Therefore a large number of people are now using this system.

Hydroponics gardening includes different types of gardening methods. They are divided in terms of the water supplying around plants roots. Generally, two major categories are considered i.e. Passive (hydroculture) gardening, and an Active (hydroponic) gardening.
Active Gardening:A pump is used to circulate the water to plants in the active gardens. It catches water from reservoir supplies to the plants.

The Trickle Garden System:In the trickle gardening system an air pump is used to supply the water to the plants. It catches water from the reservoirs and provides to the plants. A flexible pipe is used to pass water and air simultaneously to the plants. This is one of the best active gardening systems and popular in many countries. It is available in different sizes and shapes. They provide excellent mixture of water and air to the plants and gives good better result than other systems.

The Ebb and Flow Method:This system is also known as the Flood and Drain System. It is oldest method. Now, it is molded and modernized. A mechanical water pump is used to supply water to the plants. A timer is attached to the pump so that could control the pump during water supply.

The water pump automatically turned on by the timer and it will flood the medium for specific time. And it will be turned off to drain water back into reservoirs. This automatic on and off action provides enough air to the mediums when level of water drops. The action can be repeated many times during a day. Therefore this system requires large reservoir systems.

Gardening by Greenhouse

Those who take gardening seriously know there are times of the year when you need plants to grow, but the weather outside will simply not cooperate. There are some plants that need extra heat, and the climate is just not right. For these occasions, greenhouse gardening is a great way to get what you need. Some love this for getting plants going before it is time to plant them, and that means they are well ahead of the game when spring has sprung.

For others, this allows them to have plants that would otherwise fail when the temperatures dip too low. Most people won't need a very large greenhouse, but what you want to get will be up to you. If you think you need more room, go ahead and get the size that seems right. Greenhouse gardening allows for new options, and some find they like it so much that they are suddenly out of room for all of the plants they wish to have.

When this happens, it might be a scramble to get an addition or even a larger space. When choosing your space for greenhouse gardening, always go a little bigger than you think is just right for you. The best greenhouses are the ones that have a great seal, and that allow in as much natural light as possible. They should also have tiles that vent in fresh air when needed.

The whole point of greenhouse gardening is to let in and trap as much heat from the sun as possible, and there are some types that work better for this than others. Think about how you may cover up some plants when a frost is due. The greenhouse works in the same way, but works much better. This is a great way to start your tomato plants in the early spring without frost being an issue.

The vents allow you to regulate the temps and allow in fresh air when things need to be adjusted. It may take a while to really get the hang of greenhouse gardening. Must like gardening outside, there are tricks to getting it right. You can do your research, and that is always a great idea, but you should also make sure you take it one step at a time until you are sure you know the best techniques for greenhouse gardening for your particular climate.

The greenhouses for gardening are not as commonly used as they once were, but they are still rather popular for the serious gardener that wants to get the best out of both their flower and vegetable gardens each year.
